UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou successfully defended his belt for the first time at UFC 270. The champ went into the contest as a +120 underdog against his former teammate Cyril Gane.
Gane got the better of the striking exchanges for the first two rounds, using his footwork and speed to control the action. Francis switched things up in the third round, impressing the crowd with his powerful takedowns. He used his wrestling to dominate the championship rounds, securing his first successful title defense via unanimous decision.
The end of the bout was not without drama, as UFC president Dana White was noticeably missing when it was time to strap the belt around the champion. He was nowhere to be found during the post-fight press conference as well.
“I don’t know. You have to ask him [Dana]. No, I did not have anything to do about that,” Ngannou said when prodded about White’s disappearance. “I think that was their decision. I’m about to ask about that, too.”
